Mario de Miranda - Art-Cartoonist – Goa: PADMA VIBHUSHAN

Mario de Miranda is an award-winning social cartoonist, based in Loutolim, Goa India. His social comments and great visual chronicles that he described as his diaries won him two of the highest civilian honours in the form of the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Shri in 1988. Mario never formally studied Art but began working as a Cartoonist for the Times of India Group in 1953. He later specialized in illustration and fine art. He has also illustrated many books including Inside Goa by Manohar Malgonkar, A family in Goa and The Open Eyes by Dom Moraes. He had been invited to sketch and hold exhibitions in the U.S.A., Japan, Germany, Spain and France. His interesteing sketches of College life at St. Xavier’s are displayed in the lobby of the College.

Shabana Azmi - Art – Cinema – Maharashtra: PADMA BHUSHAN

Actress and Social Activist, her performances in films in a variety of genres have generally earned her praises and awards including five times the National Film Award for Best Actress. Shabana joined the ranks of Nelson Mandela and Coretta Scott Young when she was awarded the 2006 International Gandhi Peace Prize in recognition of her work with slum dwellers. The award was presented to her at the House of Lords in London on October 26, 2006.

 

Dr. Jose Pereira - Literature and Education – USA: PADMA BHUSHAN

Dr José Pereira was born in Bombay in January 1931. He studied painting at the Sir JJ School of Art, and he was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Ancient Indian History and Culture through St. Xavier’s College. Dr Pereira then did research and taught at the Instituto Superior de Estudos Ultramarinos in Lisbon, the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, the Institute of Archaeology, also in London, the American Academy of Benares in Varanasi, and Fordham University in New York – where he was Professor of Theology and lectured on the History of Religions.
 

Dr. Swati A. Piramal - Trade and Industry – Maharashtra: PADMA SHRI

Director of Piramal Healthcare Limited and several other companies of the Piramal Group, she has been on the Prime Minister’s Consultative Group for Scientific Research for several years. Dr. Swati Piramal was the proud recipient of the Knight of the Order of Merit Award – the second highest civilian award of France, for her contribution to the development of Indo French relations in the field of medicine and trade. She is the first woman to be elected President of ASSOCHAM: the Indian Chamber of Commerce (2009 – 10) in its 87 year history.

Each of them has made a significant contribution to the world, excelling in their field of work!
