Holy Family Alumni Football Tournament

The Event:The HyFyXs, (the recently adopted abbreviation for)  Holy Family High School Ex-Students Association, organised a Football tournament exclusively for the alumni of HFHS on 14th of August, 2011 on the school grounds. This is the second edition.

The Draw:The tournament was a success. We had as many as 10 teams (2 more than the last time) with each team having an average of 9 to 11 players. The matches kicked off at 8 am following which there was the first round of matches for all the teams. 5 teams in each pool which means there were two lucky teams got a bye in the first round itself. All matches were played in the spirit of camaraderie and bonhomie. Through the day more than a 100 alumni marked their presence. Look out for pictures on the FB. Most of the players were youngsters -- age group 18 to 25.

The Finalists: were ‘The Rangers’ against ‘the Gunners’. Olliver Bennis opened the scoring for the Rangers and went on to score one more during the match whereas goals from John Coutinho, Jenoy George and Amit Gorpade sealed a 5 – 0 victory for them, making them the champions for the second time in a row.

The Booty: There was a small photo session and an award ceremony where Mr. Joe Nathan the Past President of the Association, handed over the runners-up cash prize of Rs. 3000/- to the captain Bernard Joseph. Next, Gautam stepped forward and received the first place cash prize of Rs. 5000/- for the Rangers from Mr.Pawan Kumar Pruthi the current President of the Association.

The Acknowledgments:The association is thankful to Fr.Francis Swamy, Principal of the school for extending all support and providing the ground and the facilities. Special thanks go to Dennis Sir the Sports master in the school who coordinated the collection of the forms, the draw, organising the referees and the groundsmen. The association members who volunteered on the day of the tournament were Pawan Kumar, Joe Nathan, Harbinder Bedi, Sharath Shetty, Sanjay Ajgaonkar and John Neelankavil. Special thanks to William for  coordinating with the various teams before and during the competition, Facebook messages and finally putting together this report and providing the pictures.

This is the 2nd edition of this tournament and has now been decidedly added to our calendar of activities each year. A cricket tournament on similar lines is planned for December.

Met Joe once again at the Independence Day celebrations at St. Stanislaus. He was very knowledgable about football and kept shout instructions to his Holy Family players. 

Great fun catching up with fellow Jesuit alumni even if once a year.
